Owens Corning shingles,installed in Omaha.
The Duration line is built around SureNail, a woven strip in the nailing zone that gives every nail more to hold onto in high wind. We install Duration, Duration FLEX, and TruDefinition Duration across the Omaha metro, and we can walk you through which one fits your roof and your budget.

The short answer
Which Duration should Omaha homeowners pick for hail?
Duration FLEX. It carries a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating, the highest there is for asphalt shingles, because the asphalt is blended with SBS polymer. That blend lets the shingle flex under a hail strike instead of cracking. A Class 4 roof can also earn an insurance premium discount of 10-30% depending on carrier, so ask your agent before you pick a shingle. If your budget stops short of FLEX, standard Duration is a solid Class 3 shingle, and either one can anchor a full roof replacement.

| Duration FLEX | Class 4 | 130 mph | SBS-modified asphalt for hail protection, our Owens Corning recommendation for impact resistance |
| TruDefinition Duration | Class 3 | 110-130 mph | Enhanced color granules for a deeper look, with the same performance as Duration |

SureNail
A fabric strip where the nails go.
Every Duration shingle has a woven fabric strip running through the nailing zone. When a nail goes through that strip, it grips fabric and asphalt together instead of asphalt alone, so the shingle stays put when wind gets under the edge. The strip also gives the installer a wide, clearly marked target, which means fewer high or low nails on your roof. After 25 years in the trades, David will tell you that most wind damage starts with a nail in the wrong place, and SureNail takes a lot of that risk off the table.

Hail
FLEX is the one we recommend for hail.
Duration FLEX starts with the same SureNail strip and adds SBS polymer to the asphalt, the same rubberized chemistry used in commercial membranes. That is what earns the Class 4 rating, and it also delivers 42% better nail pull-through resistance than a standard shingle, which matters because the storms that bring hail here bring wind with it. If you are replacing a roof because of hail, FLEX is the Owens Corning product we quote first.
Colors
15 colors available in the Omaha area.
Duration, Duration FLEX, and TruDefinition Duration share the same palette in our market. TruDefinition is the line to consider when the color itself is the point, because its enhanced granules give the roof more depth and contrast. The impact rating, wind rating, and warranty all match standard Duration, so that upgrade is about the look and nothing else.

Questions
Common questions about Owens Corning shingles
Which Owens Corning shingle is best for hail in Omaha?
Duration FLEX. It carries a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating, the highest there is for asphalt shingles, because SBS polymer is blended into the asphalt. That blend lets the shingle flex under a hail strike instead of cracking. A Class 4 roof can also earn an insurance premium discount of 10-30% depending on carrier, so ask your agent what your policy allows before you pick a shingle.
What is SureNail technology?
SureNail is a woven fabric strip built into the nailing zone of every Duration shingle. A nail driven through it grips fabric and asphalt together rather than asphalt alone, which raises pull-through resistance in high wind. The strip also gives the installer a wide, clearly marked target, so nails end up where the engineering assumes they will be.
How does Duration compare to GAF Timberline HDZ?
They are close competitors. Both are Class 3 architectural shingles with similar wind warranties, and both brands offer a Class 4 upgrade, Duration FLEX from Owens Corning and ArmorShield II from GAF. We install both, so the choice comes down to color, availability, and price on the day you buy.
Is TruDefinition Duration worth the extra cost?
Only if the look matters to you. The enhanced granules give deeper color and more contrast on the roof, while the impact rating, wind rating, and warranty are the same as standard Duration. If your extra money is going toward protection instead of appearance, put it into Duration FLEX.
How long do Owens Corning shingles last in Nebraska?
Most Duration roofs in the Omaha area run 25 to 30 years with sound installation and working attic ventilation. Hail is the wild card in our region, which is one reason we point homeowners toward the Class 4 FLEX version. The limited lifetime warranty covers manufacturing defects, not storm damage or normal wear.
