Storm & Hail Damage

Hail Damage
Roof Repair

Omaha sits in one of the most active hail corridors in the country. When storms roll through, we assess the damage, document what's there, and get your roof back to where it should be.

What Storm Damage Looks Like in Omaha

Nebraska ranks third in the country for hail events. In the Omaha metro, the storm season typically runs from April through September, with the heaviest activity in May and June. Hail follows the prevailing storm track from southwest to northeast, which is why south and west-facing roof slopes usually take the worst of it.

We've seen the patterns across Elkhorn, Gretna, Millard, and west Omaha repeatedly. A single storm can affect thousands of homes across a corridor, and the damage isn't always obvious from the ground.

Types of Damage We See After Storms

Hail Impact Damage

Hailstones dent shingles and dislodge the granule coating that protects the underlying asphalt from UV. Impact marks show as dark circular spots, concentrated on slopes facing the storm direction. On standard 3-tab or aging architectural shingles, 1-inch hail can crack through to the mat. Class 4 impact-resistant shingles like GAF UHDZ or Owens Corning Duration FLEX are built to handle that same impact better, though performance varies with hail size and conditions.

Wind Damage

Straight-line winds and microbursts lift shingle tabs starting at edges and ridges. Once a seal strip breaks, the shingle flaps with every subsequent gust, accelerating the damage. We see this pattern most on homes with 3-tab shingles or older architectural shingles where the adhesive has weakened over time.

Fallen Debris and Tree Impact

Branches and tree limbs puncture or displace roofing material on impact. Even a small branch can crack shingles and dent flashing. Larger limbs cause structural damage to the decking underneath. These require immediate tarping to prevent water entry until permanent repairs are made.

Water and Ice Dam Damage

Heavy rain exploits any gap created by hail or wind. Ice dams form when snow melts and refreezes at the eave, backing water under shingles. The damage often doesn't show up until weeks later as ceiling stains or attic moisture. Proper ventilation and underlayment help, but ice dams in a severe winter can overwhelm even good systems.

What We See During Storm Assessments

We document everything during our inspections. These photos show the kinds of impacts we find on roofs and siding across Omaha. Clear documentation makes the difference when filing an insurance claim.

What Happens After You Call

From assessment through restoration

1

Free Storm Damage Inspection

We inspect the full roof system, not just the obvious spots. Hail damage concentrates on certain slopes and flashing points. We check every surface, document impact density, and photograph the patterns. You get a clear picture of what the storm did.

2

Damage Assessment Report

Photos, measurements, and written scope. This report details what's damaged, what's still sound, and what needs to happen. If you're filing an insurance claim, this documentation helps your adjuster understand the full scope.

3

Insurance Coordination

We work with your insurance company through the claims process. We'll meet your adjuster on-site if needed and make sure nothing gets missed in the scope. Our job is to make sure the claim reflects the actual damage. See our insurance claims page for more on how that works.

4

Repair or Replacement

Once the scope and funding are settled, we schedule the work. Storm repairs range from targeted fixes on a few shingles to full replacements depending on the extent. We use quality materials from GAF, Owens Corning, and the other brands we carry, and we install them the right way.

Preventing Future Storm Damage

If your roof is being replaced after storm damage, it's worth considering a Class 4 impact-resistant shingle. These are tested to withstand 2-inch hail without cracking through to the mat under standardized lab testing. We carry Class 4 options from multiple manufacturers:

Insurance benefit: Many Nebraska homeowners insurance carriers offer a 10-30% premium discount for Class 4 impact-resistant roofing. The savings can offset the higher material cost within a few years. Check with your carrier for specific discount amounts.

Storm Damage Questions

How do I know if my roof has hail damage?

From the ground, look for dark spots on shingles (exposed asphalt where granules were knocked off), dented gutters or downspouts, and damage to other exterior surfaces like siding or window screens. Granule buildup in gutters after a storm is another indicator. A professional inspection confirms the extent.

Should I get an inspection after every storm?

Not every storm warrants an inspection. If the National Weather Service reports hail over 1 inch in your area, or you see visible damage to soft metals like gutters, mailboxes, or AC fins, it's worth having someone look. Most inspections after storm events are free.

How long do I have to file a hail damage claim?

Most Nebraska homeowner's policies allow one year from the date of damage. Filing sooner is better because it's easier to correlate damage to a specific storm when the evidence is fresh. Weather service data and neighborhood damage patterns support the timeline.

Will my insurance cover a full replacement for hail damage?

If hail damage is widespread enough that repairs won't restore the roof's integrity, insurance typically covers replacement. The adjuster's assessment determines scope. Our documentation helps ensure nothing gets missed. Partial replacement is sometimes appropriate when damage is concentrated on certain slopes.

What are Class 4 impact-resistant shingles?

Class 4 is the highest impact resistance rating for roofing materials, tested to withstand a 2-inch steel ball dropped from 20 feet without cracking. In real-world terms, they handle larger hail better than standard shingles. Most Nebraska insurance carriers offer premium discounts of 10-30% for Class 4 roofs.
