Premium Fiber Cement Siding

James Hardie
Fiber Cement Siding

Hardie installations from 2010-2015 around the metro show almost no expansion cracking ten-plus years in. The cementitious core doesn't move much with temperature, and ColorPlus factory finish still looks new on south walls we inspected this spring.

How Hardie Holds Up in Omaha

Three things tell you whether siding will last in this climate: how it handles hail, how it moves with temperature, and how it sheds wind off corners and gable ends. Here's how Hardie has actually performed on the houses we've installed it on.

Hail Resistance

Fiber cement handles hail better than vinyl or wood. During the July 2023 hailstorm with 1.75 inch stones across metro, James Hardie siding showed impact marks but no cracking, while vinyl siding on adjacent homes required replacement.

Freeze-Thaw Performance

Fiber cement absorbs moisture without degrading. The cementitious core barely moves through freeze-thaw cycles, so it doesn't develop the hairline cracks you see in some other materials. North-facing walls we installed a decade ago still look the same as the south side.

Wind Resistance

Properly fastened James Hardie siding withstands sustained winds. Corner lots and exposed western exposures in Elkhorn and Gretna show minimal lifting or displacement even after 60+ mph wind events.

James Hardie Product Lines

HardiePlank Lap Siding

Traditional horizontal lap siding available in multiple widths: 5.25", 6.25", 7.25", and 8.25". Standard 5/16" thickness with 12-foot lengths. Nailing requires 1.25" minimum penetration at 16" on-center.

ColorPlus technology provides factory-applied finish in 23 colors. Omaha installations from 2015 show zero fade on south-facing exposures as of 2026.

HardiePanel Vertical Siding

Vertical panel system in 4'x8', 4'x9', and 4'x10' sheets. Creates board-and-batten or shiplap appearance depending on application. Common on modern farmhouse styles in newer Omaha developments.

Requires careful nailing at panel edges and field to prevent separation. When properly installed, resists wind uplift better than horizontal applications.

HardieTrim Boards

Fiber cement trim boards for corners, window casings, and fascia. Available in various widths and thicknesses. Eliminates need for metal corner trim while maintaining consistent appearance.

Accepts paint and stain finish. Resists rot and insect damage unlike wood alternatives.

ColorPlus Technology

Factory-applied finish system with 15-year warranty. Three-coat application provides superior color retention compared to field painting. Twenty-three color options available.

Homes we've checked from 2015 still show very little fade, even on south-facing walls. No chalking observed after 8+ years.

Installation Requirements

Proper installation requires 1/8" gap at all joints to accommodate seasonal movement. Nails must be hot-dipped galvanized or stainless steel, driven flush but not over-driven.

Fastener Requirements

Minimum 1.25" penetration into studs. Ring-shank or spiral-shank nails prevent pull-out. Fastener heads driven flush with surface,over-driving fractures the face, under-driving creates moisture entry points.

Flashing Details

Flashing must extend minimum 2" behind siding at windows and doors. Head flashing prevents water entry above openings. Proper kickout flashing where siding meets roofline protects wall penetration points.

Corner Treatments

Outside corners use either HardieTrim boards or metal corners. Inside corners require caulk sealant. Proper corner detail prevents moisture infiltration and maintains appearance over decades.

Cost Considerations

James Hardie installation costs reflect material quality and installation complexity. Square footage, story height, trim details, and window count all affect project pricing.

Factors Affecting Cost

Square footage: Larger surface areas spread fixed costs across more material, affecting per-square-foot pricing.
Story height: Two-story installations require additional staging and safety equipment, increasing labor costs.
Trim complexity: Windows, doors, and architectural details require precise cutting and fitting. More openings increase installation time.
Material selection: ColorPlus factory finish carries premium over field-painted options. Wider plank widths and specialty profiles affect material costs.

Note: Specific project costs depend on house configuration, material selections, and current conditions. Future estimator tool will provide project-specific pricing based on your home's details.

Local Performance Examples

James Hardie holds up consistently across Omaha neighborhoods. We see the same durability whether it is on a shaded north wall in Dundee or a sun-baked west wall in Elkhorn.

West Omaha Developments

Elkhorn and Gretna subdivisions built 2010-2015 feature extensive James Hardie installations. ColorPlus finish shows no fading on south and west exposures despite intense afternoon sun. Corner boards remain tight to walls with no separation.

Storm Performance Observations

The July 2023 hailstorm was real-world testing. Hardie houses we inspected showed surface marks but no through-cracking. The vinyl houses next door needed full replacement.

Historic District Applications

Dundee and Benson renovations use Hardie to match historic wood siding profiles. Smooth and textured finishes replicate the original appearance without the rot and repaint cycle of old cedar. Installations we did in 2005-2010 still sit flat and tight against the wall.
